Friends of the Elko County Library

The Friends of the Elko County Library was formed in late 1988. The purpose of this organization shall be to maintain an association of persons interested in libraries; to focus attention on the library; to stimulate the use of the library’s resources and services; to receive and encourage gifts, endowments, and bequests to the library; to support and cooperate with the library in developing library services and facilities for the community; to lend legislative support where needed and to support the freedom to read as expressed in the American Library Association Bill of Rights.

Who We Are


The Friends of the Library conduct fundraisers. Funds go directly back to the library to purchase materials, equipment or programming.

Monthly meetings are held in the meeting room of the Elko County Library every 3rd Tuesday of each month at noon (September - May).

What we have done in the past

Since its inception in 1990, the Friends of the Elko County Library have donated over $230,000. Through the Friends of the Library, the library has been able to:

  • Purchase library books for the Children’s Department
  • Purchase adult books, both non-fiction and fiction materials
  • Purchase magazines
  • Purchase audio materials
  • Purchase downloadable materials
  • Purchase supplies to assist with the painting of the inside of the library
  • Give monies for programs
  • Give monies to assist with the operational costs of the bookmobile
  • Purchase furniture
  • Establish a Scholarship program

Julia Doren Memorial Scholarship

The 2021 Scholarship Applications are now available.

The Julia Doren Memorial Scholarship has been established by the Friends of the Elko County Library to honor her memory and commitment to the library.

Julia worked in all areas of the library and had a special place in her heart for the Bookmobile. Julia was President of the Friends of the Library for several years and worked hard for library advocacy.


The amount of this scholarship is $500.00 to a person who is taking higher education courses through attendance at a two/four year college, online courses or correspondence courses.


  1. Any person who can show enrollment in a higher education course at a two or four year college, online or correspondence courses.
  2. Must be a United States citizen and a resident of Elko, Lander, Eureka, or White Pine Counties.
  3. Applicant must submit a typed essay (no less than 500 words) on the use and importance of public libraries.
  4. Essays must be received no later than  . The successful applicant will be notified after April 23  .

Membership Information


Membership is only $15 for 3 years and you can be as involved as much or as little as you wish to be.

You must be 21 or older to be a member of the Friends of the Elko County Library.
